So as you paddle the calm waters laced with mangroves and palm trees, you can catch and hold these gentle glowing creatures.
In the warm and dark lagoon waters on the Space Coast of Florida lies a natural phenomenon of glowing blue waters alive with activity called bioluminescence. Charlie took us to different islands and tunnels. We’ve heard guests say it looks like: “Space Mountain, time travel, a galaxy right below you, space sparkles,” and more! Every time you paddle, it looks like pixie dust in the water, glowing with the movement of the paddle.
Peak season is July-September. ~Our NEW HEADQUARTERS is in Point Reyes Station, next to the gas station. When nature is stranger than fiction, there is nothing more awe-inspiring. Guaranteed trips, Check for emails Although the Space Coast is known for its beaches, space history, and one of the best cruise ports, a little-known phenomena that you can experience right here in the many different bodies of water our area is home to is called bioluminescence. He is a true Orlando native and a great source of local must-do’s. Tours depart nightly: In summer months there are 3-4 departures per night between 8:30 pm to midnight. When to Go: Bioluminescence is most easily observed on the darkest nights, when the moon isn't clearly visible. Book online, and or call to book the same day 407-519-8711.
The less moonlight, the brighter the bio luminous sea creatures will appear. Paddling in a clear kayak will enhance your bioluminescence viewing experience by a long shot! Charlie also made the experience that much better. If you are not coming during that time, it may appear somewhat different, but it is still awesome! Change of clothes should you decide to go to town with splashing around in the water because you will get wet (although it’s not recommended that you swim during these night tours). Treat yourself to an evening paddle with Blue Waters Kayaking. Experience it first hand!
Austin is a soon-to-be graduate of UCF-Rosen with his Bachelors in Hospitality and Event Management. Our group even parked our boats for a bit to explore a small grove and do some swimming. On all our group camps, your guide and camp host will lead guided tours from camp for anyone who wants to explore Tomales Bay after the sun goes down. We suggest booking on a night with 55% less of a moon! Each stroke creates streaks and puffs of blue-green neon light under the surface and sends glittery droplets into the dark night sky. With clear kayaks you are able to look between your legs and see the bio right underneath you the whole time! Every stroke of the paddle, every move made by the living creatures below the surface, every splash made by your hand, becomes a mesmerizing illumination that looks like shooting stars across the night sky and the famous northern lights but in the water. Both rivers are part of the Indian River Lagoon – We affectionately call this Florida’s “Bioluminescent Bay.”. We offer 2-3 tours per night (when the moon is darker than 55%).
Safety first Note that in July-August dinoflagellates appear so bright that almost any night is great!
Florida is home to many natural bodies of water, some of which light up at night as part of a phenomenon called bioluminescence. Let the full moon illuminate your path as you paddle along mangrove shores and shallow waters of the Merritt Island National Wildlife refuge. It was the perfect mix of relaxing fun and activity. Moonlight effects this tour and how brightly you will see glowing plankton.
