In my opinion, the leaves grow every which-a-way in an unattractive manner necessitating their banishment from my flower beds. To maintain its shapely oval form, occasional pruning is recommended. But about September changes will begin to happen and after several weeks the cones will begin to form.
Also called Indian Head Ginger, Spiral Ginger, Red Cane Ginger, or Scarlet Spiral Flag, bright ruby red spiky cones produce orange flag-like flowers, each less than one inch in size, with a barely visible lower yellow lip. It grows three to four feet tall and wide, possibly up to 12 feet in hot temperatures and other optimal conditions. This pine cone ginger plant had been transplanted 14 months ago into a large pot. I have a large patch of the pine cone ginger. I emptied it on my hair, rubbed it around as if using shampoo, and then rinsed. My friends are right.
A few days after that, a very tightly wound leaf stalk emerged, standing tall. I'm in zone 9a. I think I have seen it somewhere, but not sure. It likes heat and humidity but prefers filtered shade to look green and healthy like you see here. They are not noxious though and can be removed if you find you have too many.
And as you can see, it is quite happy and has adjusted very nicely. That is a great question.
I really didn't know much about these plants at that time. By growing your ginger plant in well draining, rich soil, your plant will be less susceptible to root rot. It is October now, and I have a cone beginning to turn red.
I have seen the cones before in the state parks I have walked through but as long as I have lived in Florida, I have never had them growing in my yard.
One thing to remember is that they really do spread.

The pine cone ginger is not invasive but its rhizomes do spread and the plants take up a lot of room in the flower bed. Plants that are pollinated by hummingbirds do not necessarily have a place to perch. When spaced further apart, the less often they will need to be propagated by division in the future.

Details Z. officinale grows to 1m, with lance-shaped leaves to 20cm long, narrowed to a fine point. But when I get new cones I will pull a few and dry them and see.
