He attended UW-LaCrosse (UW-L) in 1969 and played varsity football under Roger Harring and linebacker coach Roland Christensen.Dennis enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1970 where he co-captained the third marine division football team that won the inter-service championship in Okinawa, Japan in 1971.After discharge from the Marine Corps, Dennis returned to UW-L and played on the 1973, 1974 and 1975 WSUC championship teams. Johnson, a LSU graduate and member of the school’s 2011 Southeastern Conference Championship team, comes to Waco following a 2019 season spent as an analyst at LSU. In the 2020 class, Johnson helped piece together a deep defensive line group that includes the likes of four-stars Jaquelin Roy and Jacobian Guillory, among others. Stay tuned to Geaux247 for more on LSU's coaching changes this offseason. 2012-13 Northwestern State (graduate assistant, linebackers, 2012; secondary, 2013) Johnson, who also spent time at Northwestern State before returning to LSU, had joined the staff full-time in the same offseason that Orgeron hired Mickey Joseph away from Louisiana Tech and Tommie Robinson, who was previously at Southern Cal. Now, he will depart for Baylor as the team's defensive line coach, a position he once held in Baton Rouge. His arrival in Baton Rouge came after his decision to transfer in from Itawamba Community College in Mississippi. A three-year letterwinner for LSU from 2009-11, Johnson joined the Tigers in 2008 after transferring from Itawamba Community College in Mississippi.

Johnson was first elevated to a full-time assistant coach in September of 2016 where he coached outside linebackers for the final eight games of the year. He also coached as an assistant in track and wrestling. Season Bowl Team Opponent Results Johnson, who is affectionately nicknamed “Meatball” is a former LSU defensive linemen who was a member of the Tigers’ 13-0 regular season and Southeastern Conference Championship team in 2011. Johnson remained with the defensive line in 2015, working under Orgeron. As a player for the Tigers, Johnson developed into a dependable backup on the defensive line where he played in 19 games in three years.
Johnson had worked at LSU as a graduate assistant before his promotion during the 2016 season, where he worked as a transient employee during the months of October, November and December following the university's decision to fire head coach Les Miles and promote Orgeron to an interim head coach role.
