Has your electronic autopilot made you lazy when it comes to sail trim and boat balance?

The less sensitive the vane is to the wind, the less force it exerts on the steering oar and helm–and vice versa. The mast should be tuned to render the helm as neutral as possible in medium wind.

For example, by raking the axis aft and locking down the clamping knob you are desensitizing the vane. We often found that minor adjustments to the bungee damping control were most effective when dialing in a course on this point of sail.

No other system can do this.

A vane detects the changes in the wind and transfer that to the attached mechanism below in the water.

You may engage it all the way to the left for maximum speed and power. This is a shame, as a windvane is an ingenious bit of engineering. 3.Fine tune the course adjustment, so that the boat maintains the precise compass course (or point of sail) required . One other feature is that you can also hook a tiller autopilot onto the Hydrovane tiller and that is also a great thing because a tiller autopilot is relatively low cost because it is pushing a semi balanced rudder.

Arcturus, our 1966 Allied Seabreeze yawl, has a Cape Horn servo-pendulum windvane, which operates on the same principle pioneered by Blondie Hasler back in the 1960s.A vertical tube supports the air vane, which pivots on a horizontal axis at its base. Upwind, the genoa and mizzen were usually enough to make 5 knots, and weather helm was nonexistent.

The apparent wind at the top of the mast (which is where your wind instruments are measuring from) may be different from the apparent wind the vane feels.

It’s not as easy as pressing a button, but once you learn to use a windvane you’ll never get stuck hand-steering again.

Sailing Today is the magazine for cruising sailors who love to sail the coast of Britain, across the Channel to northern Europe and beyond.

Simple and robust, it is often described by proponents as the single most useful piece of gear on a bluewater boat.

The biggest drawback to a windvane, once you’ve mastered it, is that it only steers to the wind. The leading edge of the vane is set facing into the wind, and when the boat veers off course, the wind catches one of the vane’s flat sides, causing it to topple over. If you doesn’t know what a sailing wind vane is, it’s an equipment for maintaining the sailing boat’s direction in a straight line without you having to constantly steering the boat. If the boat constantly wants to round up, don’t look to your windvane. Then you replace it with the heavy weather 17 inch one that is made out of aluminum which is for heavy weather. As the boat falls off course the wind angle changes and the vane is pushed over.

I am Joseph Tan and had been interested in several off the main path topics for a while.

All modern servo-pendulum units work on this principle, though most have steering control lines running directly from the steering oar to a boat’s wheel or tiller. Once a boat is properly balanced, a vane should steer a straight course at least as well as most human helmsmen. It’s important to feel the helm; the boat should almost be steering herself by the time you are ready to engage the windvane. On a true beam reach, generally the most challenging point of sail for a windvane, the control lines should be set very close to equal.

This is a big + and only possible as the mechanism has almost zero friction.

When the boat goes off course, the wind pushes the vane over.

Auxiliary rudder systems are independent from all other aspects of the boat.

Once moved from dead ahead position, the flow of the water pushes the oar to one side with force. The steering oar or paddle in the Cape Horn unit is not an external rudder.

4.Trim the control lines – If the boat is not perfectly balanced under sail and requires some weather or lee helm, the length of the control lines can be adjusted to induce a certain rudder angle so that when the boat is on course, the steering oar is approximately vertical in the water and the magnitude of the correction is roughly equal on both sides.

The spinnaker is typically used for downwind sailing and trim controls are limited, mainly the spinnaker sheet, pole and guy. The genius of the system is that it harnesses the power of the wind and sea to steer a boat. So long as there was wind to keep the sails full, the vane had no problem maintaining a course upwind or down. This is the servo pendulum that goes in the water and when the wind vane at the top turns, it twists this ever so slightly and causes it to swing up and down through the water and all that hydraulic force is applied to the Cape Horn quadrant.

Only just over 50 years old, the charter business came from an unlikely place and has evolved significantly in ...read more, Thanks to Covid-19, 2020 has been a year like no other. The oar, which is also hinged at the top to pivot on a horizontal axis, is consequently deflected sideways by the water flowing past it. Now you have an emergency tiller and rudder so you can actually steer the boat with the Hydrovane tiller.

If the wind shifts 10 degrees, the vane is going to follow if there is a dramatic sail wind shift and you can actually use the remote course sighting line by moving the vane, which puts the vane hard over and gets you on the course that you want to be on. Like an old-fashioned rooftop weather vane, the masthead fly is essentially an arrow pointing into the direction from which the wind is coming (remember this is apparent wind, affected by the boat's direction of motion and speed, not true wind direction). The crescent that sits on the turret is actually a kind of swing back and forth and acts as a counter weight to the wind vane. Minor tweaking is fairly normal – to fall off or head up a few degrees. So the next control is the ratio control and what this does is it actually allows you to tune the vane for the conditions so you can either add power or take away power from the vane. Adjust course back to your desired heading by changing the vane angle and readjusting sails for the new point of sail. FREE Shipping. We put whippings on each of our lines to measure this, and control-line tension was the third point on our mental checklist. You can, however, fit a small electronic tiller pilot to “steer” the air vane in place of the wind. When a boat is perfectly balanced, a windvane's steering control lines should be tensioned equally.

On a shorthanded cruising boat, maintaining that kind of efficiency is not sustainable. Step by step to engaging the Hydrovane unit for self-steering:- 1.The tiller is locked in a central position – in some circumstances you may wish to set up a little weather helm first before locking it 2.The sail is placed so that the wind blows onto one side or the other 3.Lock the main rudder in that sweet spot that balances out the boat 4.Get the leading edge of the vane facing the wind 5.Put the unit into gear – set for light, medium or heavy conditions. The only spare part you really need is a piece of ¼ inch (6 mm) ordinary bungee cord. The remote core setting line which is basically an endless loop going back to the unit and a bungee cord is attached to it to just keeps enough tension on it so that it is not going to skip off.

Since its launch in 1997, the magazine has sealed its reputation for essential sailing information and advice.

No self-steering device can overcome a poorly balanced boat. The goal should be to steer with your fingertips. It even steered running under bare poles while we did foredeck work. It is good practice to initially set the control lines equally. Such course adjustments are done on most units by pulling a line that can rotate the vane through 360 degrees – to whatever point of sail you want to be on. So when you are motoring on light airs it actually will control the Hydrovane rudder and you get an autopilot.

It works well on its own and can be an invaluable backup to an electronic autopilot. Conversely, when the wind picked up, we eased the cord to increase the vane’s power. Offshore, it was Sune-the-Driver who steered us home. Your course follows the wind, but over long distances this is much more efficient, comfortable, and surprisingly faster than a magnetic compass course. Some sailors are confused that it can be use as an emergency rudder if the main rudder sustains damage. Most servo-pendulum models steer using the ship’s rudder via control lines led to the ship’s wheel or tiller. Anchoring tips – it’s easy when you know how.

Tradewind sailing is lovely with fairly consistent wind direction, but if there’s a wind shift over time your heading will also be changing. Other manufacturers also offer air vanes of different weights, or you can fabricate your own. Control lines run from this quadrant to the boat’s main steering quadrant or can run directly to a wheel or tiller. So if you hit like a log or something through the water, it won’t bend and break all this stuff on the back.

If easing the main right out to the shrouds did not ease the helm and help the vane settle down, we knew it was time to reef—our second mental check. There are three settings for the ratio control knob to change the rudder angle and steering power: You may want to fine tune to find out the performance of the Hydrovane. Incline the vane to desensitize it.

Experiment.

In practice, we found this was often necessary, but you have to be careful. But if the wind shifts more drastically, let’s say 20°, then your course will also shift by 20° following the wind. In some cases, the steering oar is connected to an independent rudder. Arcturus, our 1966 Allied Seabreeze yawl, has a Cape Horn servo-pendulum windvane, which operates on the same principle pioneered by Blondie Hasler back in the 1960s.
