Training on Digital security & combating misinformation & fake news

BACKGROUND

The popular saying is ‘data is the new oil’. We are living in an era where every human activity is accounted as a digital data. The high value of this data along with lack of awareness among people how this data is being used for corporate purposes. It also poses long-term risks to the right to privacy and other civil liberties. It is imperative for everyone to protect their data, their privacy and digital communications.

In the times of big data and IOT, digital security has become more significant than ever. Most of tech driven companies are collecting personal data and service monitors not only day to day activity but also uses their data (personal information) for their business purposes without having user consent. Every day, corporations are coming up with new and inventive ways to monetize personal data, often compromising on users’ civil liberties.

In addition, there have been instances where cyber-attacks have compromised highly sensitive personal information on a very large scale (such as the attack on Equifax that leaked social security numbers), proving that cyber-security is no longer a niche area. India witnessed more than 27,000 cyber security threat incidents in the first half of 2017, according to CERT India report. Increasing reliance on the Internet and smart devices is exposing people to more cyber-security threats, and the problem will only be compounded as technology permeates ever deeper into daily lives.

In todays’ age, new digital platforms have unleashed innovative journalistic practices that enabled novel forms of communications and greater global reach. On the other hand, misinformation and hoaxes or fake news are increasing day-by-day and affecting the individuals and interpret daily developments.

In this scenario, it is also concern for users, who are mostly unaware about the privacy and security risks that they face on daily basis or the nature and extent of damage that stands to be done in consequence. Moreover, in the age of misinformation, it is important not only to have knowledge about digital security tools but also capable enough to understand the nuances of misinformation and fake news.
